Summit Plastics Automation is a leading supplier of the MDS Balance Gravimetric Dosing Unit by Movacolor (previously known as the MCBalance).

Renowned for its highly accurate inline dosing capabilities, this unit automatically weighs every granule to ensure the perfect blend, with Movacolor stating a dosing accuracy of up to 0.05%.  Simple and easy to use, all you have to do is set your desired percentage of each material and the dosing unit takes over.

Even when faced with deviations from your production machine’s vibrations, the MDS Balance can precisely calculate the ‘loss-in-weigh’ of the material in your hopper. This exceptional accuracy makes it a preferred choice across various precision-demanding industries, such as injection moulding, extrusion, and blow moulding.

In just a minute’s setup, you can lower your material usage by up to 20% compared to volumetric techniques – providing significant savings through decreased usage of costly additives and a reduction in scrap.

Summit Plastics Automation can provide a variety of different systems, to meet any project requirement.

The MDS Balance is the industry-leading Gravimetric Doser. With flexible dosing capacities from 0.07 - 180 kg/h, this unit is used daily in various injection moulding, blow moulding, and extrusion applications.

Its patented weighing technology and dosing cylinder deliver precision, even when low dosage rates are necessary. This ensures high savings – with a phenomenally short payback period – as the use of expensive additives and materials is minimised.

With a continuous loss-in-weight measuring feature and automatic material calibration, the MDS Balance Unit can guarantee accuracy in even the most demanding of environments. It also features a touchscreen and MCLan system for easy operation and monitoring of your processes – with additives taking less than 60 seconds to change.

For more information about these systems, please refer to the datasheet below.

Summit Plastics Automation provides the MCS 60 High Output Unit for high-capacity and industrial applications. With capacities from 50 kg/h - 1,200 kg/h, this system can dose an impressively high additive output without sacrificing precision.

Its system continually calibrates your dosage and adjusts automatically throughout your processes. It can also handle challenging materials, including granulates, difficult regrinds, and free-flowing powders, whilst processing hot materials up to 180°C.

This machine can easily integrate with other Movacolor dosing units, ensuring the flexibility your project requires. To learn more, explore the datasheet for the MCS 60 High Output Unit below.

What is a Gravimetric Dosing Unit?

A Gravimetric Dosing unit is a specialised device used primarily in the plastics industry for the measurement and dispensation of materials based on their weight. Our systems operate on a 'loss-in-weight' technology, a mechanism that continuously monitors the storage and mass of a particular substance, dispensing it with an exceptional degree of accuracy.

The advantage of Gravimetric Dosers over other methods like Volumetric Dosing, which measure solely on volume, is its ability to offer superior control and precision.

Inaccurate material mixing can lead to inconsistent product quality and increased wastage. In preventing this, the Gravimetric Dosing Unit is crucial in environments where precise blending and exact proportions of materials are required.

Choosing Your Dosing Unit

Summit Plastics Automation provides a variety of dosing units, including Gravimetric and Volumetric Dosers, suitable for a variety of different applications.

The right system for you will depend on your unique needs. For help choosing, we recommend talking with our expert team. As a starting point, things to consider include:

  • Precision Requirements: What level of accuracy does your project require? For demanding environments, our dosers provide an accuracy of up to 0.05%.
  • Material Handling and Adaptability: Your system will depend on the materials it handles. We provide units capable of processing various materials, including hot materials up to 180°C.
  • Consistency: How repeatable must the process be? Due to their extreme accuracy, our Gravimetric Dosers can consistently produce the same results.
  • Your Process Optimisation: Depending on your current processes, our Gravimetric Dosers can be seamlessly integrated into automated production lines to allow for efficient processes.
  • Weight Considerations: The physical weight of the dosing unit may also influence your decision. Due to their intricate mechanisms, some Gravimetric Units are heavier than others.

The Applications of Gravimetric Dosers

Due to their precision in measurement and dispensing, Gravimetric Dosers find extensive applications across multiple industries. In the plastics industry, they are often used in processes like injection moulding, extrusion, and blow moulding.

They are also used across the pharmaceutical and chemical, food and beverage, agricultural and environmental industries.  Whatever your requirements, we recommend getting in touch with our expert team who can advise you further on how these dosers can be used to streamline your processes.

Why Choose a Movacolor Gravimetric Doser?
