Air Cooled Chillers

  • Cooling capacities 10kW – 1400kW
  • Operating temperatures: 0°C to 17.5°C (Max ambient 43°C)
  • Choice of hydraulic configuration
  • Oversized heat exchangers provide industry-leading EERs
  • Multiple fan selections determined by operating and ambient temperatures
  • Water cooled options available

Here at Summit Process Cooling, we provide Air Cooled Industrial Chillers for the most demanding of requirements. These units provide effective cooling performance for environments which lack a condenser water source.

Summit Process Cooling offers a versatile range of systems, with cooling capacities between  10kW and 1400kW, and operating temperatures from 0°C to 17.5°C. Our systems are accompanied by industry-leading Energy Efficiency Ratings (EER), ensuring that they consistently deliver optimal results.

This offering includes a range of Heavy Gel Air Cooled Systems from Frigel. These units are pre-assembled and factory-tested, guaranteeing reliability and efficiency for all applications. They are gaining popularity as a cost-effective option for processors lacking a separate water unit.

For projects which require high energy efficiency, we recommend the Frigel MRS industrial-grade water chiller. These systems are perfect for both indoor and outdoor installation, offering a capacity range from 13 to 75 kW and water working temperatures from 0°C to 17.5°C.

These chillers, perfect for installation near a processing machine, boast a minimal environmental footprint. For further energy savings, of over 60%, consider utilising an integrated free cooler on your system. This saves energy by using ambient air to cool the process water, leading to the partial or complete shutdown of your refrigerating unit.

Our MRS chillers are fitted with hermetic scroll-type units, eco-friendly R410A refrigerant, axial fans, and a microchannel condenser. For more information about these systems, please refer to the datasheet provided below.

For even more demanding environments – which still require energy efficiency – we recommend the Frigel MRM industrial-grade water chiller. Operating similar to their MRS counterpart, these machines provide an impressive cooling capacity from 63 to 595 kW, with temperatures from 0°C to 17.5°C.

Available in a range of model variations which cover almost all cooling requirements and conditions, the MRM range promises:

  • Precise efficiency and reliability, both at full and part loads, by using both multi-circuit and compressor systems.
  • Accurate multi-step management, meeting the most demanding needs of industrial applications.
  • A wide operating ambient temperature range, providing you with higher flexibility thanks to a variety of variations and accessories.
  • Easy installation, facilitated by a plug-and-play modular design.

The MRM range also guarantees effortless servicing and maintenance, due to its ability to record its operating status, working conditions, and alarm history. Additionally, each unit features a digital touchscreen interface that displays performance metrics, faults, and alarms; this allows for real-time supervision in an easily understandable format. What is an Air Cooled Industrial Chiller?

An Air Cooled Chiller is a cooling system designed to remove heat from a certain space by utilising ambient air as the primary medium for heat rejection.

Here, cooled fluids are circulated throughout a system, absorbing heat and reducing the temperature of the target area. These fluids are then passed through the chiller, which releases air to reduce the temperature of that very fluid which, once cooled, will be passed back around the system on a loop.

Unlike HVAC units, industrial chillers are built to handle the direct cooling of various manufacturing processes (like brewery cooling, plastics cooling, and hydroponic cooling). By comparison, HVAC chillers are designed to regulate the environmental temperatures within designed spaces.

The Benefits of Air Cooled Chillers

Our Air Cooled units provide advantages which make them a popular choice for various applications.

First and foremost, these machines offer energy efficiency and environmental benefits. Water Cooled Chillers require a cooling tower, which uses energy through continuous water circulation and maintenance. By contrast, Air Cooled Chillers operate without these and are designed with condenser coils for optimal heat dissipation. This allows them to provide effective cooling, whilst minimising energy consumption.

Air Cooled Chillers have significantly fewer installation costs. As our systems offer a modular design, they don’t require a water infrastructure – of cooling towers, pumps, and pipes. Instead, their simplified design allows for straightforward installation and maintenance. This means our Air Cooled Chillers promise fewer upfront and long-term costs.

These Chillers are also incredibly flexible. Because they do not require proximity to a water source for their operation, they can be installed in various locations and applications thanks to their compact design.

We also offer systems which record their operating status, working conditions, and alarm history. This makes maintaining these machines much easier and ensures that your system will reliably serve you for years to come.

The Applications

Air Cooled Chillers are essential in various sectors, playing a crucial role in regulating temperatures and maintaining optimal conditions for different processes. For example:

  • In manufacturing sectors – which utilise processes like metalworking, electro-plating, and welding – chillers help to cool equipment down, preventing overheating and prolonging the lifespan of machinery.
  • In the pharmaceutical industry – for the precise temperature control required in drug manufacturing. They ensure that storage temperatures are maintained within the required limits, guaranteeing the efficacy of the drugs.
  • In the food and drink industry, when keeping products fresh during storage. They also provide necessary cooling during the manufacturing process to ensure food safety.

These are just a few of the sectors which Summit Process Cooling serves. We provide cooling solutions for all industries, so get in touch today to discuss your unique cooling needs.

Air Cooled Chillers – FAQs

A standard Air Cooled Chiller operates by transferring heat through a water circuit and expelling it into the ambient air. The process initiates when water circulates a loop, absorbing heat from its surroundings. This warmed water then gets returned to the chiller. The heat transfer occurs in an evaporator where the absorbed heat transfers to the refrigerant, while the water continues its journey through the primary supply to the cooled space.

Next, the refrigerant, now carrying the heat, travels through the compressor, increasing its pressure and temperature. Upon reaching the condenser, fans facilitate the circulation of outside air which absorbs the heat from the refrigerant.

The refrigerant, having released its heat, proceeds through the expansion valve and returns to the evaporator to repeat the cycle. This continued operation of the Air Cooled Chiller ensures a steady cooling process, effectively managing the ambient temperature.
