Navigate the Plastic Packaging Tax with Confidence
18 March 2024
Navigate the Plastic Packaging Tax with confidence. With the products in our portfolio and our expertise, we can provide multiple options to help you exceed the 30% recycled content threshold - whether thats through in-house recycling machinery or our recycled polymer compounds.
From 1 April 2024, the rate of the Plastic Packaging Tax further increased to £217.85 per tonne (from £210.82 in 2023).
For over 35 years Summit Systems has been supplying and installing plastic ancillaries and recycling machinery. We are passionate about ensuring that our customers have the most cost-efficient and advanced technology which ensures their plastics processes run smoothly and without fault. And since the introduction of the Plastic Packaging Tax, we are even more driven to help our customers adapt to the changes of meeting or exceeding the 30% recycled material threshold.
Summit Systems works with the UK Plastic Industry to assist businesses in navigating the tax while maximising the use of recycled material in their production processes. We offer a broad selection of granulators and dosing units from four leading global suppliers: Maguire, Movacolor, Tria, and Zerma, specifically designed to enhance the percentage of recycled material in your plastic production processes. And to further support this, we can source and provide a range of recycled polymer compounds which can contribute to the 30% required recycled content set out by the legislation.
Granulators & Shredders
If you are producing regrind in-house rather than purchasing from a third-party, our range of granulators guarantees the right product for the right application: low speed granulators for beside the press operation, edge trim and thermoform specialist, miniature machines for low volume recycling or engineering plastics and large heavy-duty granulators for general recycling.
The Zerma Heavy Duty Granulator GSH, is ideal for tough applications which include 24/7 recycling. A dependable machine with a typical throughput of 300-700kg/hr. with heavy-duty bearings and V-cut knife design gives efficient cutting with low dust.
The extensive range of machinery from Zerma covers the entire spectrum of size reduction technology required within the plastics industry; from the small GSL slow speed granulators to the versatile GSH heavy-duty granulators including small and compact granulators with integrated blower and soundproofing.
The Tria Multi-Purpose Granulators are ideal for recycling both rigid and flexible materials such as sprues, injection molded, or extruded parts. The range has the lowest running cost per kilo of any machine on the market and offers extremely robust and reliable machinery, creating quality regrind for re-use into production processes.
If you are producing regrind in-house rather than purchasing from a third-party, the TRIA range of granulators guarantees the right product for the right application, and can assist you in achieving the 30% recycled content in your packaging as set out by the Plastic Packaging Tax.
Blending & Dosing Units
With the use of blending or dosing units, regrind can be reintroduced back into the manufacturing process. Summit Systems supplies Blenders and Dosers from leading suppliers Maguire and Movacolor, both of which boast phenomenally short payback periods.
These blenders and dosers are designed to accurately mix multiple materials including regrind and recycled polymer. At the same time, the exact weights of each component are monitored extensively, using touchscreen and smart software technology, which can then be recorded for full traceability, which is critical for completing your Plastic Packaging Tax Return.
The Maguire WSB Gravimetric Blenders are configured with the appropriate size hopper and dispense device for the required material. The new dispense devices were designed to help manufacturers with new sustainability challenges, making it easier to handle difficult materials, and increasing the usage of regrind in their processes.
The Maguire Gravimetric Blender range covers applications for up to 12 materials. Customers benefit from precision mixing, simple operation, minimum setup time and low capital cost. The first and only weigh-scale blender designed from the ground up.
The Movacolor Gravimetric Doser series uses loss-in-weight weighing system and dosing cylinder technology. Feeders are equipped with a touchscreen controller with MCSmart software, which gives you full control over your extrusion, injection moulding or blow moulding process.
This dosing unit from Movacolor, has a phenomenally short payback period. Used in all extrusion and injection moulding processes. So accurate, it weighs every granule. You will only use as much additive as required, set the percentage and the gravimetric dosing unit will take over.
Recycled Polymer Compounds
Our expertise extends beyond recycling to encompass the entire lifecycle of plastic materials. By sourcing polymer compounds from trusted suppliers, we champion the reduction of environmental impact and promote the responsible use of plastics. Summit Recycling provides full traceability from "cradle to cradle" and offer recycled content reports for each grade. Our diverse polymer offerings, including filled, modified, and 100% recycled polymers compounds, give businesses a wide range of options to meet their specific needs.
From Ocean to Opportunity - Ocean Integrity have created a global waste management system, paying indigenous fishermen to collect and sort plastic pollution before it enters the ocean. This plastic is processed in the UK and recycled into high-quality material. RECOTHENE™ Ocean rPE, a premium recycled polymer made from recovered Low Density Polyethylene, is a result of this effort. Manufactured by Chase Plastics in an EUCertPlast accredited facility, RECOTHENE Ocean rPE meets strict quality standards. Available through Summit Recycling, it aids in mitigating the Plastic Packaging Tax and contributes to meeting the 30% recycled content requirement.
By sourcing polymer compounds from trusted suppliers, we champion the reduction of environmental impact and promote the responsible use of plastics. Through our commitment to transparency, we provide full traceability and offer recycled content reports for each grade of polymer. Our diverse polymer offerings encompass filled, modified, and 100% recycled compounds, allowing businesses to select materials that align with their sustainability goals. By incorporating these recycled compounds into your packaging materials, you can increase overall recycled content, meeting the requirements set by the Plastic Packaging Tax.
